Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can stop flying baseballs and others can weather hurricane-force winds. How?

As far as hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are rigorously tested for impact resistance.

Tests include blasting a two-by-four at the window to verify glass keeps intact. We use our hurricane cannon to fire the wood, which travels 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We concluded, if we could design a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could come up with a fix that could protect from home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was asked to help supply a historic building near Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s just what we did.

We overhauled our hurricane cannon to test the home run-resistant windows. We shot baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would mimic the force of a home run.

Our tempered glass weathered the baseballs best because it’s stronger and safer than standard annealed glass.

All About Physics

It takes a speed of more than 100 mph and a height greater than 100 feet to shoot a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s case, we learned the baseballs would be traveling at about 60 mph upon impact with windows.

But we exceeded requirements and evaluated impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not thinking about an MLB home run hurling at your residence, there are a variety of reasons to use strong, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s good for homeowners who want an additional level of safety from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are raising the next great baseball player.

Review the benefits and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Durable glass much like what is used in car windows.
  • Used where damages from broken glass are a concern.
  • Generally breaks into small, square fragments as opposed to sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t come apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To discover more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of Greensboro at 336-203-0576. Or, schedule a free, in-home consultation online.
